SUMMER BREAK

All halls close for the semester at noon on Saturday, May 18. Your room must be empty and clean and you must leave the building by this time.

After noon on May 18, your ID will no longer work open any door in our residence halls. If you are coordinating a ride with friends or family, please make sure they are aware of this deadline.

If you are staying in 365 housing in Defoe-Graham, Dogwood, Galena or Hawthorn for the summer, you will have access to your current room until your assigned move time, as share in your assignments email.

How to check out of your room

  1. Remove all belongings from your room and any shared space.
  2. Clean your room, take your trash to the dumpster, and donate unwanted items in good condition to Tiger Treasures.
  3. Check your mailbox and retrieve packages from the desk.
  4. Update your permanent address on MyZou.
  5. When you are ready to check out, complete this form. If you have concerns or would like to check out with a staff member in person, please contact your building’s RA on call.
  6. If you live in Discovery, Excellence or Respect, you must return your room keys to the front desk. Keys not returned will result in a lock change and charges of $85-$215 added to your account.

Empty and clean your room

  • Remove all belongings from your room and any shared space.
  • Floors, including in the closets, should be swept and mopped.
  • All furniture, including inside drawers, should be wiped down.
  • Leave any adhesive products on the wall. Our staff will remove them.
  • Close and lock windows. Ground-level rooms should close blinds, upper-level room should open blinds.
  • Take your trash to the Dumpster and cardboard to the cardboard recycling bin outside. Do not place cardboard or trash in the trash rooms.

Have things you don’t want to move? Donate them!

  • Tiger Pantry collects unopened, nonperishable food items.
  • Tiger Treasures collects unwanted personal items (in good condition) and organizes a rummage sale at MU Surplus shortly after finals end.
  • Collection bins for Tiger Pantry and Tiger Treasures will be in the lobby of your building.
  • Bring items to the bins! Personal items left in your room will be discarded or logged as abandoned property and you will be contacted to collect them.

Mail and packages

  • Don’t forget to check your mailbox before you leave and retrieve any packages.
  • Update your permanent address in MyZou. This is the address used to forward your mail once the halls close. If we do not have a forwarding address for you, all mail received will be returned to sender. The Postal Service will not accept change-of-address cards for Residential Life students since the university is responsible for forwarding your mail.
  • Contact any companies that you use to purchase things online and change your address to your home or summer address. We will not forward magazines, catalogs or coupons.

Don’t forget your bike!

  • If you leave your bike, it might not be here when you get back in the fall.
  • Abandoned bikes will be removed from bike racks near all halls except Defoe-Graham, Hawthorn, Galena and Dogwood on May 28, taken to surplus property and held for 60 days.

Can’t leave by noon May 18?

  • Email your residence hall coordinator (RHC) by noon on May 16 to request an extension.
  • Explain why you need to stay.
  • Wait for a confirmation email from your RHC before making plans.
  • Please note: late stay exceptions will not be granted past noon on May 19.
  • If you have questions, contact your RHC.
