About the Family and Friend Expanded Roommate Option

MU Housing offers the Family and Friend Expanded Roommate Option for students living in specific on-campus residence halls. This option allows any enrolled students to select any Mizzou student who is also currently enrolled at the University as a roommate regardless of their gender or sex.

The Family and Friend option is open to all enrolled Mizzou students. Students who select the Family and Friend option will live with a roommate who has also selected the Family and Friend option in shared suites or community style rooms with access to a single use bathroom (in suite or on floor).

Terms and Conditions

As a student selecting to live in the Family and Friend Expanded Roommate Option, I agree and acknowledge the following terms and conditions:

  1. MU Housing defines the Family and Friend Expanded Roommate Option as a housing option in which two or more students share a multiple-occupancy room or suite, in mutual agreement, regardless of the students’ gender or sex.
  2. This agreement intends to allow students the option to find a more compatible roommate and living situation regardless of gender or sex.
  3. To be eligible for the Family and Friend Expanded Roommate Option, I must secure a valid housing and dining contract and submit the Family and Friend Expanded Roommate Agreement.
  4. I understand that if I exhibit behavior that is contrary to the terms and conditions of the agreement, I may be relocated to a different housing accommodation owned or operated by MU Housing. MU Housing will provide appropriate accommodations based on availability, which may not include the Family and Friend Expanded Roommate Option. Please be aware that moving to another assignment may result in an adjustment to billing charges.
  5. I understand that spaces for the Family and Friend Expanded Roommate Option may be limited based on availability.
  6. Students must adhere to departmental room move guidelines. During the housing process, these spaces are available to anyone that submits an agreement. MU Housing reserves the right to: 1. Assign any student who signs the Family and Friend Expanded Roommate Agreement; 2. Assign a student of the same or different gender or sex; or 3. Relocate/consolidate the current resident(s) to a different space that meets their needs and accommodations. Room types cannot be guaranteed if a student is moved.
  7. I understand that it is up to me to communicate my accommodations to MU Housing by contacting my Hall Coordinator and/or the main MU Housing office to inform them of any updates or changes that may affect my housing.
  8. I understand the housing and dining contract and that I am subject to those policies and procedures within it. I understand that MU Housing does not question the student’s motives for wanting to live in the Family and Friend Expanded Roommate Option; however, it discourages students who are in a romantic or sexual relationship from living together as roommates.
  9. I agree to contribute to and participate in a supportive, welcoming community for all members. I understand that actions or behavior that put the health and/or safety of others at risk or violate University policy will be documented and may result in my removal from housing, and that these decisions will be at the discretion of MU Housing and the Office of Student Accountability and Support.
