Housing Process

You will need to know your username and password to complete your housing & dining contract.

Check your application status to find your student ID number and username.

If your student is over 18, then no! They can complete and sign their contract themselves. If your student is under 18, you will be required to sign on behalf of your student. Once your student enters your information on the Parent & Legal Guardian Guarantor page, an email with a link will be sent to the email address entered. Click on the sent link to officially sign on behalf of your student.

Don’t see an email? Check your spam or junk folders, and make sure the email address wasn’t misspelled. If you still don’t see it, your student can navigate back to the page and submit refresh to resend the email.

Your parent or legal guardian is required to sign your housing & dining contract on your behalf. Once you enter their information on the Parent & Legal Guardian Guarantor page, an email with a link will be sent to the email address entered. They must click on the sent link to officially sign on your behalf.

If they don’t see an email, encourage them to check their spam or junk folders, and make sure the email address wasn’t misspelled. If they still don’t see it, you can navigate back to the page and submit refresh to resend the email.

This is how you’ll choose your room on Mizzou’s campus! Instead of having a room assigned to you, we provide a self-selection process that gives you a say in your future home. In late April, we’ll send your assigned access time to your Mizzou email. Your assigned access time will be in May, and this is when you will select your own room and hall. Learn more on our housing process guide.

This is your hub for life in a residential hall. You’ll log into the Housing Portal to sign your housing & dining contract, select your room, see your assignment once you’ve chosen a room, and more. It’s also where you can see your mailing address, update your contact info or fill out other important housing forms.

This is when you can log in to select your room in May! You’ll be sent your assigned access time in late April to your MU email (it’ll also be in the Housing Portal). This is the earliest time you can select your room, but you’re free to continue logging on to check what rooms become available.

Room selection will begin in May. We will email your MU email in late April, notifying you what your access time will be. In the meantime, before choosing your room, we recommend having a few halls in mind rather than a single option.

Starting Dec. 15, Phase 1 is where you submit your housing & dining contract with a non-refundable $100 application fee. This phase can be completed any time before April 15. However, to receive an Early Access room selection time, complete this phase by Dec. 22.

Starting March 1, Phase 2 is where you sign our Values Agreement and complete your roommate profile in the Housing Portal. This phase can be completed any time before April 15. Creating a roommate profile and signing the agreement are required, but searching for a roommate is optional.

The $100 housing application fee is non-refundable.

You will receive a confirmation email to your MU email address after successful completion of each step. Set up your MU email inbox if you haven’t already. If you don’t receive a confirmation email after finishing a step, please review to see if you missed anything. If you’re still unsure why you haven’t received an email, reach out to Residential Life.

Honors students are among the first to choose their room. This is called the Honors Access, held before Early Access. Complete the contract and application fee by Dec. 22 to receive an access time within the first part of the Honors Access Time.

Please read our Housing Accommodations page to review the steps and get started. Due to limited housing availability, we encourage you to start this process immediately after completing the housing contract and paying the $100 application fee. You must fill out the Disability Center housing accommodation application, schedule a Housing Access Planning Meeting (APM), and meet with an access advisor to discuss barriers.

By April 1, students must have met with and have been approved for housing accommodations through the Disability Center.

Researching! Browse through the neighborhoods and halls to see what kind of housing experience you’d like to have. Additional factors to include are proximity to classes, budget and room types.

Use this worksheet to keep track of your preferences and make sure you’re ready to room select.

This is the order in which students will be able to log into the housing portal and choose their room for 2024-25:

  1. Honors student access
  2. Early access (students who completed Phase 1 by Dec. 22 and Phase 2 by April 15)
  3. Standard room selection (students who completed Phase 1 Dec. 23-April 15 and Phase 2 by April 15)

Please note: Students who complete Phases 1 and 2 after April 15 will be assigned by Residential Life after Standard room selection ends.

You may request only one roommate, so you and your friends can create two separate roommate groups. You can organize your room selection times to try to identify rooms within the same suite, near each other or within the same hall or neighborhood. Consider what is most important to you: being with your roommate or a specific room type.

If there are no suites that have space for all of you, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Room selection is a very dynamic process. As people change rooms or cancel, spaces will become available. Feel free to check back as often as you like to see what’s opened.
  2. Residential Life is about the community you create. If you aren’t able to live together in a suite, there are tons of solutions to consider: trying to live in the same hall, selecting community-style rooms that may have more availability and potentially are close together, etc.

No, the other space in your room or suite will be available for other students to select. If another student selects the second space, and you’d rather not room with them, you may choose to select another available space. You cannot remove a student from a space, and Residential Life will not remove a student from a space.

Before your assigned access time, make a list of your top five halls and room types. That way, if your first choice isn’t available, you can quickly and easily move to your other options. If you’re in a roommate pair, we recommend discussing these choices with each other so you’re on the same page.

Room selection is a very dynamic process. If none of the rooms or halls you initially wanted are available, choose a room and then check back as often as you’d like. As other students change or cancel, new options will open up.

No, there are not waitlists. Room selection is a very dynamic process. If none of the rooms or halls you initially wanted are available, choose a room and then check back as often as you’d like. As other students change or cancel, new options will open up.

Single rooms are a small percentage of our inventory. Returning students have first priority to rooms, and historically, they claim a large portion of available single rooms. It’s not uncommon for first-year students to initially want a single room, but find that they build more connections, find friends and grow their support system in double or community-style rooms.

If you’ve selected a room that you’d like to change, feel free to go into the Housing Portal at any time to choose a different available room.

  • Log into the Housing Portal
  • Click the Apply for Housing button
  • Navigate to the Room Change tab
  • Choose your new room in the same manner that you initially selected a room.

If you room change, you will also be prompted to select a new room for your roommate. If your roommate wants to stay in their original spot, you must break apart your roommate group to unlink from them.

Converted Spaces

With a strong demand for on-campus housing, some studies and lounges are converted to be bedrooms. We have also added furniture to some larger rooms that easily accommodate another person. This process is common in peer universities to address housing needs. MU Residential Life has successfully converted spaces many times before.

You will be able to see the room types in the description when viewing available rooms.

Yes! If a room is a converted space, you will see it labelled during the room selection process.

We are deeply committed to providing the groundwork for a positive living experience. All spaces have been thoroughly assessed to ensure they provide plenty of space and include very similar furniture and amenities. Here are the differences:

  • Instead of built-in closets, there will be mobile metal garment racks.
  • In some spaces, the rooms will be carpeted instead of a hard surface.
  • In some cases, you may have a hard key for room entry rather than an electronic lock.
  • The furniture in all converted spaces is very similar to the furniture in the remainder of the building, but you could either have a 60” medium loft bed, a 36” junior loft bed, or 36” junior loft/bunk-able bed.

If you’ve selected a room that you’d like to change, feel free to go into the Housing Portal at any time to choose a different available room.

Rates are based on room type. Room rates can be found on each hall page.

Roommates and Suitemates

This is the process of creating a roommate profile in the Housing Portal. You can begin making your profile on March 1, 2024. You’ll pick a username and fill out a questionnaire on things like noise preference, what time you typically go to sleep, and more. Once you’ve made your profile, you’ll get a list of your top 50 matches. You can connect with as many of them as you’d like to see if you’d like to become a roommate pair.

That’s perfectly fine. You do not need a confirmed roommate to select a room. During your room selection access time, head to the Housing Portal and select a room for yourself. You can either look for a room with one available space and view the profile information of the student(s) already assigned to that room, or you can choose a room with multiple available spaces. The other space(s) in that room will be available to all other room-selecting students.

The most important thing is compatibility. After you complete your roommate profile in the Housing Portal, you’ll see your top 50% matches. Being friends with your roommate is a plus, but we highly recommend prioritizing similar habits (noise level comfort, when you like to wake up and go to sleep, etc.) over anything else when choosing a roommate.

You may request one other student to form a roommate pair. This is because the majority of rooms on campus are community-style double rooms with space for only two students.

It is possible that you and your roommate may not be able to initially select the same room with two available spaces. In this case, we recommend that roommate pairs each select an individual space they like. Since room selection is a very dynamic process, different rooms may become available as people change rooms or cancel. If a room with two available spaces opens later in the process, you can both choose that room. We recommend doing this while on the phone with each other.

Plan for this scenario and make sure you’re on the same page with each other by using this roommate worksheet!

Connect with each other! Discuss and iron out your preferences by both filling out this worksheet. Once your assigned access time comes, we recommend calling or video chatting each other as you room select.

There are a few potential reasons:

  1. Compare roommate matching information cards and make sure there isn’t conflicting information.
  2. Make sure you’re typing in their screen name correctly.
  3. Double check that they’ve completed Phase 1 – signing the housing contract with application fee. Additionally, they need to have completed their housing profile and signed the values agreement.
  4. Verify they aren’t already in a confirmed roommate pair. Students who are already in a pair can’t be found unless they break apart.

The person who sent the roommate request is the “leader”, and the one who accepts is the “member”. It doesn’t matter who is who! We recommend that whoever has the earliest room selection time should room select for the both of you in May. As a reminder, confirmed roommates are a linked group – you’ll room select together!

Either one of you can room select for the both of you, but we recommend whoever has the earlier access time to room select. After you’ve both been assigned, you can still affect each other’s assignment. For example, your roommate can cancel your current room assignment and move you.

If you want to make sure they don’t move you, even if they switch to a different space, just break apart your roommate group. This un-links you from them.

Yes! You’re a linked pair, so whoever is room selecting must assign you both. If you’d rather room select separately, break apart your roommate group to un-link from each other.

We recommend:

  1. Having a conversation with your roommate to understand their reasoning and what next steps should look like.
  2. If you both have different needs or wants, break apart your roommate group to un-link from them. Then, choose a different assignment on your own.

Yes! If you’ve both completed your housing profile, you can send them a roommate request. Once they accept, you’ll be confirmed roommates. In late April, we’ll send you when your confirmed room selection access time will be to your MU email. Compare and see who has the earlier access time – they can select rooms on behalf of you both.

General Questions

National research shows that students who live in university housing are more successful. We know from our own data that students who live in Residential Life facilities are more likely to stay in school and graduate in four years than students who do not.

No. University policy requires first-time college students to live in Residential Life residence facilities. Your contract is for a complete academic year. All residents who have signed a legal contract are required to fulfill their responsibilities.

We have a downloadable move-in checklist to help you organize what you need to pack and what items will be provided to you. It also explains which items are not allowed in your residence hall room such as air fryers, toasters, space heaters, etc.

Please review our Animals page for a more detailed outline of the process, depending on if you’re planning to bring a pet or a Service/Emotional Support Animal.

This option is available throughout MU housing. Learn more about it on our website. If you choose this option in Phase 2, you will only see other students who are interested in this option during the roommate search process. When you room select in May, you will see only the gender-inclusive room options.

This housing option is not designed for romantic partnerships.

You can find rates for each hall on the hall pages, along with our 2024-2025 rates summary sheet!
