Below you’ll find emergency procedures, safety guidance, and room and building details that apply specifically to Galena. Please review this information so you know what to expect and where to find help when needed.

Evacuation Procedures & Locations

In case of a fire, exit Galena immediately and proceed to the lawn area west of Galena and north of the Sinclair School of Nursing. Remain there until further instructions are given.

In case of severe weather, students will be directed to the basement via the NORTH stairwell, then lined up in the corridor and into the service tunnel. Follow staff directions and remain in place until the all‑clear is given.

If you are unsure where to go, follow posted signage and the directions of Housing staff or emergency personnel.

Life Safety Equipment

AED/Narcan/Fire Extinguisher Locations

In an emergency, call 911 immediately and use life safety equipment as needed. If you need help locating equipment, contact a Resident Advisor or the Hawthorn Hall Front Desk.

AED & Narcan

  • Located in the lobby of Galena Hall
  • On the east wall, next to the main entrance

Fire Extinguishers

  • Available on every floor of the building
  • A floor map showing exact extinguisher locations is posted by the elevator on each floor

Thermostat Options

Your residence hall room is equipped with a digital thermostat that controls heating, cooling, and fan settings. The system is designed for comfort and safety and operates within a set temperature range.

Please review the instructions below to understand how your thermostat works and what adjustments you can make.

Understanding the Thermostat Display

  • Room Temperature: The screen displays the current temperature of your room.
  • Heating or Cooling Indicator: The screen will also show whether the system is currently set to Heating or Cooling mode.

Adjusting the Temperature

Switching Between Heating and Cooling

  • Press the MODE button.
  • Each press of the MODE button toggles between Heating and Cooling.
  • Watch the screen to confirm which mode is currently active.

Setting Your Desired Temperature
  • Once the correct mode is selected (Heating or Cooling), use the UP or DOWN arrows to adjust the temperature.
  • The system will respond automatically to reach the temperature you set.

Temperature Limits

For system safety and efficiency, temperature ranges are preset.

  • Cooling: The minimum temperature you can set is 72°F. You can set cooling to 72 or anything above this temperature.
  • Heating: The maximum temperature you can set is 74°F. You can set heating to 74 or anything below this temperature.

If you attempt to set a temperature outside these ranges, the thermostat will automatically adjust back within the allowed limits.

Heating & Cooling Availability

Heating and cooling availability depends on the outdoor temperature. When the outside temperature is above 55°F, heating is no longer available. When the outside temperature is lower than 55°F, cooling is no longer available.

Helpful Ways to Manage Your Room Temperature

  • Adjust the thermostat within the available mode.
  • Use the fan setting to help circulate air.
  • Open or close windows as appropriate.
  • If the room temperature remains uncomfortable for an extended period, contact your Resident Advisor for guidance.

Important Reminders

  • Do not tamper with or remove the thermostat or its label.
  • Damaged thermostats must be replaced, and residents may be charged for repairs or replacement.
  • If the thermostat is not responding, showing an error, or not maintaining temperature within the allowed range, submit a maintenance request through the Housing portal.

When to Request Help

Submit a maintenance request if:

  • The thermostat screen is blank or unresponsive
  • The room temperature is significantly outside the allowed range
  • Heating or cooling does not activate after adjusting settings

Housing staff and Facilities teams are available to support you if you experience persistent issues.

Wall Types

To help maintain your residence hall room and avoid damage charges, please review the wall decorating guidelines below before hanging items in your space. Walls vary across residence halls, but the expectations outlined here apply to all residents.

What You May Use on the Walls

Thumbtacks or push pins only

  • Thumbtacks or push pins are the only approved method for hanging items on residence hall walls.
  • Use pins sparingly and only where necessary.
  • Small pin holes are considered normal wear when used appropriately.

What You May Not Use on the Walls/Doors

Adhesive products are not permitted, including but not limited to:

  • 3M Command™ strips or hooks
  • Adhesive hooks or clips
  • Tape or double‑sided tape
  • Mounting putty
  • Velcro®
  • LED light adhesives
  • Any sticky or peel‑and‑stick products

These items can cause damage by pulling paint, drywall, or plaster from the wall—even when removed carefully.

Damage and Charges

Residents may be charged for damages if prohibited hanging methods are used on walls, doors, or furniture. This includes, but not limited to:

  • Peeling or bubbling paint
  • Torn drywall or plaster
  • Residue left behind from adhesives

Using approved hanging methods helps maintain the room and avoid repair charges at the end of the academic year.

Residents are strongly discouraged from attempting to repair wall damage on their own. Using paint, patch kits, or other materials may cause additional damage or inconsistencies that require further repair.

If damage occurs, it is best to leave the area as‑is and allow Housing staff to assess and address the repair. This helps ensure the space is restored properly and may prevent additional charges.

Understanding Your Wall Type

Wall materials can vary by building and even within the same residence hall. If you are unsure what type of wall you have or whether a hanging method is appropriate:

  • Use only thumbtacks or push pins
  • Contact your Resident Advisor (RA) OR Hall Coordinator for guidance

Bed Bunking

Beds may be bunked or adjusted in height following Housing guidelines listed below to support safe use and room setup. Beds in Galena Hall are 36” bunkable beds with height‑adjustable springs, allowing for different room configurations.

Additional Information

  • Bed height can be adjusted using the spring system.
  • Bed rails are available upon request to support safety when beds are raised or bunked.

If you have questions about bed configuration, need assistance, or would like to request bed rails, please contact your Resident Advisor or the front desk.

Responsibility & Damage Charges

Residents are responsible for damage caused by improper bed setup or furniture placement, including:

  • Scratches or indentations on the tops of dressers or desks
  • Damage caused by spring movement contacting furniture
  • Modifications to bed frames or unauthorized bunking

Proper spacing and placement help maintain furniture condition and prevent repair or replacement charges.

Need More Help?

If you are unsure how to set up your bed or where furniture should be placed:

  • Ask your Resident Advisor (RA) for guidance
  • Refer to additional diagrams or instructions linked on this page
  • Contact the front desk with questions about bed rails or approved configurations
