GENDER-INCLUSIVE HOUSING

What is Gender-Inclusive Housing?

Gender-inclusive (GI) housing is an option which allows students to live together regardless of sex assigned at birth, gender identity, or gender expressions. This includes suite-style and community-style rooms offered by MU Residential Life.

Students who select GI will roommate match and live with other students who also selected GI. These students will select spaces regardless of sex assigned at birth. You may change your answer anytime before room selection opens.

If you choose to select to live in gender-inclusive housing during the housing process, please note the following terms and conditions:

  1. The Department of Residential Life defines gender-inclusive housing as a housing option in which two or more students share a multiple-occupancy suite, in mutual agreement, regardless of the students’ sex, gender identity, and gender expression;
  2. This agreement intends to allow students the option to find a more compatible roommate and living situation regardless of gender or sex;
  3. The Department of Residential Life is providing this space as support for students in the process of discovering their gender identity or who do not wish to identify themselves by gender and want to live on campus.
  4. To be eligible for gender-inclusive housing, I must secure a valid housing and dining contract and submit the Gender-Inclusive Housing Agreement.
  5. I understand that if I exhibit behavior that is contrary to the terms and conditions of the agreement, I may be relocated to a different housing accommodation owned or operated by the Department of Residential Life. Residential Life will provide appropriate accommodations based on availability, which may not include gender inclusive housing. Please be aware that moving to another assignment may result in an adjustment to billing charges.
  6. I understand that gender-inclusive spaces may be limited based on occupancy. If these spaces are full, students may request to be added to a waitlist until Residential Life can identify an appropriate space.
  7. Students must adhere to departmental room move guidelines. During the housing process, these spaces are available to anyone that submits an agreement. Residential Life reserves the right to: 1. Assign any student who signs the Gender-Inclusive Housing Agreement 2. Assign a student of the same sex or; 3. Relocate/consolidate the current resident(s) to a different gender-inclusive space that meets their need and accommodations. Room types cannot be guaranteed if a student is moved.
  8. I understand that it is up to me to communicate my accommodations to Residential Life and by contacting my Hall Coordinator and/or the main Residential Life offices to inform them of any updates or changes that may affect my housing.
  9. I understand the Department of Residential Life housing and dining contract and that I am subject to those policies and procedures within it. I understand the Department of Residential Life does not question the student’s motives for wanting to live in a gender-inclusive housing option; however, it discourages students who are in a romantic or sexual relationship from living together as roommates.
  10. I agree to contribute to and participate in a supportive, welcoming community for all members. I understand that actions or behavior that put the health and/or safety of others at risk or violate University policy will be documented and may result in my removal from housing and that these decisions will be at the discretions of Residential Life and the Office of Student Accountability and Support.
  11. I understand it is my choice to communicate with parents, family members, and/or guardians about the decision to live in gender-inclusive housing. The University will not disclose that you are living in gender-inclusive housing.
