Mold Prevention

Mold 101

Molds are part of our natural environment and can be found just about everywhere, indoors and outdoors. The best ways to limit mold growth indoors are moisture control, proper use of thermostats to allow for air circulation, and basic housekeeping practices. This website provides guidance about mold and mildew for homes and other buildings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do for general maintenance and prevention?

  • Do not open windows while heating or cooling units are operating. This will cause condensation and may contribute to mold growth.
  • Do not place furniture or other items in front of heating and cooling units that can obstruct airflow.
  • Set thermostats no lower than 70 degrees when cooling and no higher than 74 degrees when heating your room.
  • Do not leave wet or damp clothes, towels or shoes in a pile, in closets, or on absorbent materials such as your mattress. Hang them on a drying rack until completely dry.
  • Empty your room and bathroom trash on a regular basis.
  • Report any leak or water intrusion that you notice in the Housing Portal.

What if I find mold in my room or apartment?

  1. Minor mold or mildew growth is common in any living space and generally not a cause for concern. If you see a little pink substance around the bottom of your shower curtain or a black substance on your windowsill, simply clean the area with hot soapy water or other commonly used household disinfectant as soon as you see the first signs of mold or mildew.
  2. If you follow the recommendations on this page and continue to see any mold or mildew growth, submit a maintenance request to solve the issue.

What if I find mold outside my room/in my residence hall?

Please submit a maintenance request to notify MU Housing that there is an issue in a communal space.

How does mold affect people?

Some people are sensitive to mold and may experience reactions in the presence of mold growth. Symptoms associated with mold exposure are not unique and cannot be readily distinguished from symptoms caused by other medical conditions, such as the common cold or seasonal environmental allergies. We recommend that you visit the Student Health Center or your provider if you experience any health concerns.

What if I want an air cleaner/dehumidifier?

If you would like to purchase a portable air cleaner for your room or apartment, please refer to the Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home provided by EPA.
